Do Not Pass On Shoulder

Passing other vehicles by using the paved shoulder is prohibited.

Some corridors allow shoulder driving in limited situations but never permit using the shoulder to overtake slower traffic. Where this regulation is posted, drivers must wait for a legal passing opportunity in a marked lane and may not swing onto the shoulder to get around another vehicle. Violations carry the same penalties as other illegal-passing offenses.
