Keep Right Except To Pass

Travel in the right lane on a multi-lane roadway and use the left lane only to pass slower vehicles.

On multi-lane highways posted with this regulation, the right-hand lane is the normal travel lane and the left lane is reserved for passing. Drivers cruising in the left lane must move right after completing a pass so faster traffic can use it. Common on rural interstates and divided highways where slower-lane discipline keeps traffic flowing and reduces lane-blocking.
