Painted Channelizing Island

A white-outlined, diagonally striped island that channels same-direction traffic at a diverge, merge, or turn and marks a neutral area drivers keep out of.

A painted channelizing island is a paved area outlined in white and filled with white diagonal or chevron stripes, used to guide traffic where a raised island is not present, such as the nose of an off-ramp, the gore of an on-ramp, or the space between a through lane and a turn lane. The stripes designate a neutral area meant to discourage travel across it, directing drivers into a defined lane on one side. Pick your lane and settle into it before you reach the point of the island, steering around the striped area as you would a raised island. Stripes are white where the separated streams of traffic move in the same general direction; a neutral area that separates opposing directions of travel is striped in yellow instead.
