Shoulder

Also known as: road shoulder, breakdown lane, hard shoulder

The strip of pavement or gravel alongside the travel lane, separated from traffic by a solid white line on the right edge of the road. Shoulders are intended for emergency stops, disabled vehicles, and bicycles, not for travel or passing, except where signs specifically allow it.
