Low Shoulder

The shoulder is lower than the travel lane; a drop-off can pull a wheel off the pavement.

The shoulder sits below the level of the paved travel lane, creating an edge that can grab a tire if you drift off. If a wheel does drop off, ease off the accelerator, hold the wheel steady, and steer back onto the pavement gradually rather than jerking the wheel.
