Oregon Practice Construction Signs

When does a reduced work zone speed limit end?

  1. A.
At a posted End Work Zone Speed Limit sign Correct
  2. B.
    When workers leave the area
  3. C.
When you pass the last orange cone
  4. D.
At the next intersection past the zone
The Why

The answer is "At a posted End Work Zone Speed Limit sign"

The reduced work zone speed limit ends at an End Work Zone Speed Limit sign or another posted speed sign. Workers walking off, the last cone, or the next intersection do not end the limit. The trap on this question is treating the limit as conditional on visible activity; the rule keys off the sign, not the scene around you.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. When workers leave the area

The limit does not depend on whether workers are still on site. Misreading: Misreads the rule that the temporary speed applies at all times, even if workers are not visible, by treating worker presence as the trigger.

C. When you pass the last orange cone

Cones may end before the speed-limit zone does; the sign controls. Misreading: Confuses cones, which guide you away from construction, with the End Work Zone Speed Limit sign that actually ends the reduced limit.

D. At the next intersection past the zone

Intersections do not trigger the end of a work zone speed limit. Misreading: Invents an intersection-based trigger; the manual ties the end of the reduced limit only to a posted End Work Zone or other speed limit sign.
