Oregon Insurance Requirements

Minimum liability coverage required to drive legally, plus uninsured-motorist and SR-22 rules.

Insurance required

Oregon requires every driver to carry liability insurance on every vehicle operated on public roads. Driving uninsured is grounds for license suspension. Proof of insurance must be presented at the drive test, at traffic stops, and after collisions.

Uninsured-motorist coverage required

Uninsured-motorist (UM) coverage is mandatory in Oregon. Minimum: **$25,000 per person / $50,000 per collision** for bodily injury. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is also mandatory: $15,000 per person for reasonable medical, dental, and related expenses within two years of injury.

SR-22 / Future Responsibility Filing trigger

Oregon calls its SR-22 equivalent a **Future Responsibility Filing (FRF / Form SR-22)**. It is required after: - A **DUII conviction**: 3 years from the date of suspension/reinstatement (ORS 813.510) - **Driving uninsured**: typically 3 years - **Reinstatement after a suspension** for at-fault uninsured crashes, financial-responsibility judgments, or repeat moving-violation suspensions - Reinstatement after **certain serious traffic crimes** (e.g., reckless driving with injury, leaving the scene) The filing certifies that the driver is carrying at least Oregon's minimum liability insurance and authorizes the insurer to notify DMV of any lapse. A lapse triggers immediate license suspension for the remainder of the FRF term.
