Retake wait (days)

There is no waiting period. Neither the Vehicle and Traffic Law nor the DMV's licensing regulations impose one on a written test taken in an office, and the DMV publishes none, so an applicant may retest as soon as the office can seat them. What limits the applicant is the fee rather than the calendar: the $10 application fee entitles the holder to take the knowledge test no more than twice, and a third attempt requires a new $10 application fee, which in turn buys two more. There is no cap on how many times a person may apply.

Source: NY VTL § 503(2)(a): "The fee required for the initiation of the licensing process ... shall be ten dollars", which "shall enable the applicant to take the knowledge test required for issuance of a learner's permit and driver's license no more than twice", and "If an applicant fails to pass the knowledge test ... in the number of times specified ... a new application fee shall be required." No waiting period appears in VTL § 503, in 15 NYCRR § 3.3 (general driver licensing procedure), or in the DMV's permit-test pages; recorded as an absence after checking all three. Checked 2026-09-27. [2026-09-27] A six-hour wait for resubmitting a failed at-home online test was recorded here earlier the same day and has been removed: it came from a search summary of dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/take-online-learner-permit-test, which now returns 404 and whose mirror redirects to the same 404. No live DMV page, statute or regulation states it. Do not reinstate it without a page that can be opened. Verified Aug 2026
