Following distance
Also known as: gap distance, space cushion, trailing distance
The space between a vehicle and the one directly ahead, measured in seconds rather than feet. In Oregon, a safe following distance is 2 to 4 seconds, and 4 seconds or more at speeds above 30 mph. Lengthen the gap further in rain, snow, fog, or low light.
