Florida Practice Turning

You are preparing to turn at an upcoming intersection. Under Florida law, how far before the turn must you activate your turn signal?

  1. A.
Fifty feet ahead of the intersection
  2. B.
At least 100 feet before the turn Correct
  3. C.
Two hundred feet from the corner
  4. D.
Three hundred feet in advance of the turn
The Why

The answer is "At least 100 feet before the turn"

Florida requires signaling at least 100 feet before the turn so drivers around you see the intention before you commit to it. A common wrong pick is choice A, which halves the required distance by substituting a rough car-length or block estimate for the figure the manual actually prints for turn signals.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. Fifty feet ahead of the intersection

Halves the required distance and would leave drivers behind you almost no warning to react to your maneuver. This answer substitutes a rough car-length or block estimate for the 100-foot minimum the manual prints for turn signals.

C. Two hundred feet from the corner

Signal distance and the return-to-right-lane distance from the passing rules are two different numbers printed a page apart. This answer carries over the 200-foot return-to-the-right-lane distance from the overtaking rules on page 67 and applies it to turn signaling.

D. Three hundred feet in advance of the turn

Overshoots the requirement by triple; no Florida turn-signal rule sits at 300 feet. This answer triples the required distance, likely by conflating it with a headlight-dimming figure from the night-driving section of the manual.
