Virginia Insurance Requirements

Minimum liability coverage required to drive legally, plus uninsured-motorist and SR-22 rules.

SR-22 trigger

Virginia does not use the term 'SR-22' in the driver's manual, but the equivalent mechanism is triggered when you are caught driving without insurance and did not pay the uninsured motor vehicle fee. DMV will suspend your driving privilege until you pay a $600 noncompliance fee (or are approved for a payment plan) and your insurance company files a certificate that you have a policy with the required coverage limits. You must keep that certificate of insurance on file for three years from the date your driving privilege is reinstated. The manual does not address SR-22-equivalent filings triggered by DUI, reckless driving, or other convictions; those are set by Code of Virginia statute and the DMV Financial Responsibility Certifications program.
