Soft Shoulder

The shoulder is unpaved or soft; leaving the travel lane onto it can cause loss of control.

The shoulder beside the road is dirt, sand, or otherwise soft. Dropping a wheel off the pavement can pull the vehicle off-course or cause it to bog down. Stay in the travel lane and, if you must use the shoulder, slow well below highway speed before easing onto it.
