Mounted at the edge of a dip or low-water crossing so drivers can read the depth of any water on the roadway. The numbered scale runs from the pavement up in one-foot increments. Even shallow moving water can stall an engine or float a vehicle, so use the gauge to decide whether to turn around; never enter water of uncertain depth.
