Bridge Ices Before Road

The bridge deck ahead can freeze before the surrounding pavement; slow down and prepare for slick conditions in cold weather.

Bridge decks lose heat from above and below, so they freeze sooner than the roadway leading up to them. Reduce speed before reaching the bridge in near-freezing or wet weather, avoid sudden braking or steering inputs, and watch for black ice even when the approach pavement looks dry. Common in mountain passes, river crossings, and shaded overpasses.
