The white telephone handset on a blue square marks a public telephone. It is one of the oldest motorist service symbols and still appears in the current federal manual, often in rural areas and at rest areas where cell coverage is unreliable. The manual also allows it alongside emergency call signs so drivers can report a crash or breakdown.
