Reference Location Sign (Milepost)

Marks how many miles along the highway you are, counted from where the route enters the state.

Mileposts are small green panels with white numerals set at one mile intervals along the shoulder. The number counts up from the point where the route enters the state, usually the south or west end, so mileposts also tell you which direction you are traveling. They are the fastest way to tell an emergency dispatcher exactly where you are.
