When you turn onto a road with more than one lane going in your direction, the manual requires you to turn into the closest lane going that way. For a right turn onto a two-lane road, that is the right lane. Turning into any other lane creates conflict with drivers already there, and the manual bars any lane change until you have completed the turn. Reaching for D means prepositioning early for a later lane change, a move the manual does not permit until the turn is finished.
