Oregon Practice Insurance & Financial Responsibility

What is Oregon's minimum Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage for bodily injury?

  1. A.
$25,000 per person, $50,000 per collision. Correct
  2. B.
$15,000 per person, $30,000 per collision.
  3. C.
UM coverage is optional in Oregon.
  4. D.
$10,000 per person, $20,000 per collision.
The Why

The answer is "$25,000 per person, $50,000 per collision."

Oregon requires Uninsured Motorist coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per collision for bodily injury, the same per-person and per-collision split as the basic bodily-injury liability minimum. The trap is choice B: $15,000 is the Personal Injury Protection per-person figure listed one bullet above UM in the same Mandatory Insurance section, the number test-takers most often misfile as UM.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. $15,000 per person, $30,000 per collision.

$15,000 is the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) per-person minimum, not the UM minimum. UM is $25,000 / $50,000. This answer confuses Uninsured Motorist Coverage with Personal Injury Protection, whose minimum the manual lists as $15,000 per person.

C. UM coverage is optional in Oregon.

The manual lists UM among the mandatory minimum coverages every Oregon driver must carry. This answer treats UM as optional, but the manual groups it with Bodily Injury, Property Damage, and PIP under the mandatory insurance every driver must carry.

D. $10,000 per person, $20,000 per collision.

UM minimums are $25,000 / $50,000, not these lower figures. This answer treats UM as a low-end coverage; understates both the per-person and per-collision figures the manual sets at $25,000 / $50,000.
