What is the minimum age to be issued a Class E (Taxi/Livery) driver license in New York?
-
A.
17, when you hold a driver education Certificate of Completion.
-
B.
18, the standard minimum age for a Class E license. Correct
-
C.
21, matching the required age for a supervising driver.
-
D.
16, matching the minimum age for a Class DJ license.
The answer is "18, the standard minimum age for a Class E license."
A Class E license requires the applicant to be at least 18. Choice A applies the Class D driver-education shortcut, which lets a 17-year-old with a course certificate hold a Class D license but does not extend to for-hire driving.
The traps in the wrong answers
A. 17, when you hold a driver education Certificate of Completion.
The age-17 driver-education exception applies only to Class D. This answer carries the Class D driver-education shortcut over to Class E.
C. 21, matching the required age for a supervising driver.
Twenty-one is the supervising-driver age, not the applicant's own age. This answer confuses the age of a required supervisor with the age of the license holder.
D. 16, matching the minimum age for a Class DJ license.
Sixteen is the DJ age; Class E requires the full adult age. This answer extends the junior-license age to a for-hire class it does not apply to.
