Illinois Practice Road Markings

You see a solid yellow line paired with a broken yellow line down the center of the road. When may you pass?

  1. A.
Whenever the oncoming lane is clear.
  2. B.
Never, because a solid yellow line is present.
  3. C.
When the broken line is nearest your lane. Correct
  4. D.
When the solid line separates you from oncoming traffic.
The Why

The answer is "When the broken line is nearest your lane."

With a paired solid-and-broken yellow line, passing is legal only when the broken line is nearest your lane. Choice D inverts the pair; drivers who remember 'the line closest to me controls' pick solid but reverse which line grants permission.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. Whenever the oncoming lane is clear.

A clear lane is not enough when a solid yellow marks your side. This answer applies the 'pass when clear' habit from broken-yellow roads to the paired combination.

B. Never, because a solid yellow line is present.

The paired combination allows passing from the broken-line side. This answer reads any solid yellow as an absolute no-passing marker and misses the paired-line exception.

D. When the solid line separates you from oncoming traffic.

Passing requires the broken line on your side, not the solid one. This answer inverts the pair and reads solid-on-my-side as the permission when it is the block.
