Solid double white lines separate two lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. What are you required to do?
-
A.
May cross to reach an exit ramp.
-
B.
May cross with a signal and caution.
-
C.
May cross them to pass slower vehicles.
-
D.
Must not cross the lines. Correct
The answer is "Must not cross the lines."
Solid double white lines prohibit crossing, with no exceptions listed for passing, exits, or a signaled lane change. Drivers who pick B are applying the single-solid rule (special care, discouraged) and reading the second line as extra caution rather than the upgrade to outright prohibition.
The traps in the wrong answers
A. May cross to reach an exit ramp.
The manual lists no exit-ramp exception to the double solid white prohibition. This answer imports a freeway-ramp exception from states that break the double line before an exit, assuming Illinois does the same.
B. May cross with a signal and caution.
That is close to the rule for a single solid white line; the double version is prohibited outright. This answer uses the general signal-and-check lane-change routine taught for broken and single-solid lines, and reads the second line as a nudge toward more caution rather than a switch to prohibition.
C. May cross them to pass slower vehicles.
The prohibition has no exception for passing a slow vehicle. This answer applies the broken-white-line passing rule to a marking the manual prohibits crossing at all.
