Illinois Practice Passing

Another driver has started to pass you on a two-lane highway. What does the manual say you must not do while they pass?

  1. A.
Increase your speed until the pass has been completed Correct
  2. B.
Move onto the right shoulder to give the passing driver more room
  3. C.
Signal a right turn to help guide the passing driver back
  4. D.
Slow down until the passing driver has cleared your front bumper
The Why

The answer is "Increase your speed until the pass has been completed"

The manual says the driver of the vehicle being passed must not increase speed until the pass is completed. Drivers who pick 'slow down' are flipping the rule to its opposite, reasoning that a ban on speeding up must mean an obligation to slow down.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. Move onto the right shoulder to give the passing driver more room

The manual gives the passed driver only one duty during the pass: do not speed up. It says nothing about moving onto the shoulder to make room for the vehicle going around you. This answer borrows the pull-right rule from the emergency-vehicle section and applies it to a routine pass.

C. Signal a right turn to help guide the passing driver back

The manual bans flashing turn signals as a courtesy or 'do pass' signal to other drivers, so using one to guide a passing driver is not allowed. This answer treats a courtesy turn-signal flash as helpful communication, which the passing section explicitly forbids.

D. Slow down until the passing driver has cleared your front bumper

The manual tells the passed driver not to speed up; it does not tell them to slow down. The rule sets a ceiling on your speed, not a requirement to drop below it. This answer reads the ban on speeding up as an instruction to slow down, treating the two as logical opposites.
