Illinois Practice Passing

You are finishing a pass on a two-lane highway. Before how many feet from an oncoming vehicle must you return to your lane?

  1. A.
    200 feet Correct
  2. B.
    500 feet
  3. C.
    100 feet
  4. D.
    300 feet
The Why

The answer is "200 feet"

The manual sets a 200-foot buffer between you and any oncoming vehicle when finishing a pass on a two-lane highway. Drivers reaching for 100 feet are pulling in the no-passing figure the manual uses around intersections and railroad crossings, and applying it in the wrong place.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. 500 feet

This answer overstates the buffer; the manual gives 200 feet, not 500, as the oncoming-vehicle distance. It carries the cellphone-and-camera figure from the emergency-scene rule into the passing rule.

C. 100 feet

This answer names the wrong figure; the manual gives 200 feet as the buffer to an oncoming vehicle. It substitutes the intersection-and-crossing figure from the same section for the oncoming-vehicle number.

D. 300 feet

The manual does not use 300 feet as the oncoming-vehicle buffer. This answer reaches for a rounder middle figure between the numbers printed nearby in the same section.
