Illinois Practice Parking

How far from the nearest rail of a railroad crossing must you park?

  1. A.
    At least 50 feet Correct
  2. B.
    At least 100 feet
  3. C.
    At least 15 feet
  4. D.
    At least 30 feet
The Why

The answer is "At least 50 feet"

Parking is prohibited within 50 feet of the nearest rail of a railroad crossing. Choice D is the STOP-sign figure applied to tracks, a substitution drivers make when 'thirty feet' becomes their single go-to distance for anything requiring caution.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. At least 100 feet

One hundred feet exceeds the distance the manual sets. This answer doubles the printed figure out of extra caution around trains, an inflation the manual does not ask for.

C. At least 15 feet

Fifteen feet is the fire-hydrant distance, not the railroad distance. This answer reuses the hydrant number for tracks because both feel like fixed obstacles worth avoiding.

D. At least 30 feet

Thirty feet is the buffer around STOP signs, YIELD signs, and traffic lights. This answer locks in 30 feet as the default caution distance and applies it wherever the manual asks for a buffer.
