Illinois Practice Parking

You park on a hill on a road with no curb. Which way should you turn your front wheels?

  1. A.
Toward the side of the road where you are parked Correct
  2. B.
Toward the center of the road
  3. C.
It does not matter if the parking brake is set
  4. D.
Straight ahead so the vehicle will not drift
The Why

The answer is "Toward the side of the road where you are parked"

With no curb to stop the wheels, aim the front tires toward the side of the road you are parked on so any roll drifts the car off the pavement rather than into a live lane. Choice D skips the wheel turn on the belief that no curb means no rule, when the manual writes a separate instruction for no-curb parking.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. Toward the center of the road

Wheels aimed at the center point a rolling car straight at oncoming traffic. This answer carries over the uphill-with-curb rule of turning wheels away from the curb, and aims at the road center in the curb's place.

C. It does not matter if the parking brake is set

The manual treats the wheel-turn instruction separately from any parking-brake use, so setting the brake does not make the wheel turn optional. This answer reads the parking-brake step as covering the wheel-turn step, drawing on the habit of trusting a set brake alone to hold a parked car in place.

D. Straight ahead so the vehicle will not drift

Straight wheels give a rolling car nowhere safe to go on an open shoulder. This answer assumes the wheel-turn rule needs a curb to work, and drops the turn once the curb is gone.
