Driver's License Test Prep
Illinois Practice Licensing Process

You have permanently moved to Illinois with a valid out-of-state driver's license. Within how long must you obtain an Illinois license?

  1. A.
    One year
  2. B.
    10 days
  3. C.
    90 days Correct
  4. D.
    30 days
The Why

The answer is "90 days"

A new resident with a valid out-of-state license has 90 days, or until that license expires, whichever comes first. The 10-day answer draws from the Illinois address-change deadline on the next manual page, and a driver who ran both timing rules together can swap them.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. One year

Illinois does not allow a new resident to keep driving on an out-of-state license for a full year. This answer assumes the driver can wait until the next natural renewal instead of switching promptly.

B. 10 days

The 10-day rule is the deadline for notifying the Secretary of State of an address change, not for switching your license after a move to Illinois. This answer carries the address-change deadline over from the section printed just below the new-resident rule.

D. 30 days

Thirty days is the timeline for applying for a corrected license after a legal name change, not for a new resident. This answer substitutes the name-change deadline for the residency deadline.
