Driver's License Test Prep
Illinois Practice Licensing Process

A driver applying for a basic license to operate a passenger car in Illinois is issued which classification of license?

  1. A.
    Class L
  2. B.
    Class D Correct
  3. C.
    Class M
  4. D.
    Class A
The Why

The answer is "Class D"

Illinois issues a Class D license for a basic car. Choice D tempts test-takers who see the classifications listed alphabetically starting at D and assume the first entry must be the ordinary one, but Class A actually names the heaviest combination-vehicle tier at 26,001 pounds or more.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. Class L

Class L authorizes a motor-driven cycle with less than 150cc displacement, which is a scooter class, not a car class. This answer applies a small motor-driven cycle class to a four-wheeled passenger vehicle.

C. Class M

Class M is the motorcycle license and does not cover a passenger car. This answer reads the M as standing for motor and assumes it covers any motor vehicle when it names only motorcycles.

D. Class A

Class A covers combination vehicles with a gross combined weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, not a standard passenger car. This answer reads the classification list alphabetically and picks the first entry instead of stepping to the passenger-car tier.
