You miss your intended exit on an expressway. The manual instructs you to:
-
A.
Stop and wait for a break in traffic, then reverse.
-
B.
Continue to the next available exit. Correct
-
C.
Cross the median at the first opening to head back.
-
D.
Back up on the shoulder to reach the exit ramp.
The answer is "Continue to the next available exit."
Miss an exit on an expressway and you go on to the next one; backing up on an expressway is against the law. D tempts the driver who figures the shoulder is available for exactly this kind of quick fix, but the manual treats reverse on a controlled-access roadway as a violation.
The traps in the wrong answers
A. Stop and wait for a break in traffic, then reverse.
The manual bans stopping on an expressway for anything but a genuine emergency, and reversing besides. This answer combines the parking-lot instinct of stopping-and-reversing with expressway conditions where neither is legal.
C. Cross the median at the first opening to head back.
The manual prohibits crossing the median strip on a divided highway. This answer confuses the median-crossing ban with a permitted correction for a missed exit.
D. Back up on the shoulder to reach the exit ramp.
The manual bars backing up on any shoulder or roadway of a controlled-access roadway. This answer treats the shoulder as an emergency reversing lane, a use the manual specifically bars.
