Before you change lanes on an expressway, the manual instructs you to:
-
A.
Come to a rolling stop in your current lane.
-
B.
Wait for a gap of at least four seconds.
-
C.
Match the speed of traffic in the new lane.
-
D.
Check your rearview and side mirrors. Correct
The answer is "Check your rearview and side mirrors."
The manual says to check your rearview and side mirrors before every lane change on an expressway. Matching traffic speed appears in the same section, but under how to enter the expressway from a ramp; a driver reading straight through carries that step over and picks C.
The traps in the wrong answers
A. Come to a rolling stop in your current lane.
The manual never asks a driver to slow to a rolling stop for a lane change; that would create a rear-end risk. This answer applies the yield-sign approach speed to a routine lane change.
B. Wait for a gap of at least four seconds.
The manual gives no four-second gap requirement for lane changes; the four-second figure belongs to following-distance guidance. This answer confuses the following-distance rule of thumb with a lane-change waiting rule.
C. Match the speed of traffic in the new lane.
Matching traffic speed is the manual's rule for entering an expressway from a ramp, not for a mainline lane change. This answer carries the on-ramp merge step over to a lane change already in progress on the mainline.
