Illinois Practice Crash Procedures

Regardless of fault, a crash in Illinois where every driver is insured has to be reported to police once property damage passes what amount?

  1. A.
    Repair costs above $2,500
  2. B.
Any crash with property damage over $500
  3. C.
Property damage of at least $1,000
  4. D.
Property damage more than $1,500 Correct
The Why

The answer is "Property damage more than $1,500"

For a fully insured crash, the reporting trigger is property damage of more than $1,500. The duty that figure switches on is the driver's: notify police at once, by the fastest means available, if no officer is already there. The written report itself is the investigating officer's to file. Choice B comes from the $500 figure printed right beside it in the same paragraph; that lower number applies only when a vehicle in the crash is uninsured, and readers pull it forward without noticing the condition attached.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. Repair costs above $2,500

Reuses the $2,500 maximum failure-to-report fine as if it were the report threshold itself. This answer confuses a penalty amount with the rule that triggers the penalty.

B. Any crash with property damage over $500

Applies the $500 threshold, which only kicks in when a vehicle in the crash is uninsured. This answer grabs the lower figure sitting in the next sentence without noticing the uninsured condition attached to it.

C. Property damage of at least $1,000

Uses the $1,000 figure the manual attaches to leaving-the-scene suspensions, not to crash reports. This answer blurs two dollar thresholds the manual prints in the same chapter.
