California License & Test Fees
What it costs to apply for a learner permit, take the knowledge and skills tests, and get your first license.
- Fee Permit
-
California charges one $46 application fee, and the instruction permit and the driver's licence come out of it. You are not billed twice: pay $46 when you apply, and the permit and the licence that follows are both covered by that application.

- Fee Knowledge Test
-
There is no separate charge for the knowledge test. The $46 Class C application fee covers it, and it buys three attempts at each required knowledge test. Fail the same test three times and the application is void, at which point you reapply and pay the $46 again.
- Fee Skills Test
-
Your first behind-the-wheel drive test is covered by the $46 application fee. Each retest after a failure costs $9. It is the one place in the California process where failing has a direct price attached, and it is small.

- Fee License First
-
A first Class C driver's licence costs $46. The fee is nonrefundable and covers the application, the knowledge test (three attempts) and the first behind-the-wheel drive test.

- Fee License Renewal
-
Renewing a Class C licence costs $46, the same as an original. Renewals can often be done online or by mail; when a renewal does require a knowledge test, the DMV may offer eLearning instead, a no-fail self-paced course with a quiz after each module.

- Fee Id Card
-
A standard California ID card is $40. Two discounts exist and are worth knowing: applicants 62 and older pay nothing, and a reduced-fee ID for those who qualify on income grounds is $11.

- Retake fee
-
There is no separate knowledge-test retest fee. The nonrefundable Class C application fee ($46, valid for 12 months) allows three attempts at each required knowledge test; after three failures the application is void and a new application fee is due. (The DMV fee table lists a $9 retest fee only for the behind-the-wheel drive test.)
