Right Lane Closed Ahead
The right lane ends at the work zone ahead, so merge out of it early rather than waiting until the lane runs out.
W20-5 names the lane that is closing and tells you how far you have to get out of it. The distance line is the whole point of the sign: it exists so you can merge at speed while there is still a gap, instead of arriving at the taper and forcing your way in. A matching version reads LEFT LANE CLOSED when the closure is on the other side, and a related W20-5a sign is used where two adjacent lanes are closed.
