Road Work Ahead
Road construction or maintenance is going on up ahead, so slow down and watch for workers, equipment, and changed lanes.
W20-1 is the first sign you meet on the approach to almost every work zone, and it is the one that tells you the normal rules of that stretch of road no longer apply. The legend carries either the word AHEAD or a distance, as it does here, so you know how much room you have to slow down before the work actually starts. Expect narrowed lanes, workers on foot, slow-moving equipment entering the roadway, and in many places a reduced speed limit with higher fines.
