US Road Signs Warning Signs

What does this yellow diamond sign warn of ahead?

Yellow diamond with a black snaking arrow pointing up, the lower portion of the road weaving through several reversing curves
  1. A.
A single sharp curve that bends to the right.
  2. B.
Three or more curves ahead, first one to the right. Correct
  3. C.
Two curves in opposite directions, starting with a bend to the right.
  4. D.
A right-hand turn at an intersection ahead.
The Why

The answer is "Three or more curves ahead, first one to the right."

The sign warns of a series of three or more curves ahead, and the first one bends to the right. Reduce speed before the first curve and stay ready for steering reversals through the whole stretch. The two-bend answer catches drivers who read the S-shape symbol as a reverse curve, the pattern carried by the W1-4R Reverse Curve sign, which caps at exactly two bends.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. A single sharp curve that bends to the right.

A single curve to the right is what the W1-2R Curve sign warns of, not the three-or-more sequence shown here. Took the sign for the lone-curve advance warning and stopped reading past the first bend.

C. Two curves in opposite directions, starting with a bend to the right.

A pair of opposing bends is what the W1-4R Reverse Curve sign shows; the winding sign covers a longer series. Stopped counting after the first two bends and mistook the winding stretch for a reversal.

D. A right-hand turn at an intersection ahead.

A sharp right-angle corner is shown by the W1-1R Turn sign, not by the gentler curves of the winding sign. Treated a smooth series of curves as a block-corner intersection with a hard right.
