Pennsylvania Practice Passing

A road has a combination centerline with a solid yellow line and a broken yellow line. The broken line is on your side. What are you allowed to do?

  1. A.
You may pass if conditions are safe Correct
  2. B.
You may not pass under any conditions
  3. C.
You may pass only during daylight hours
  4. D.
You may pass only if oncoming traffic yields
The Why

The answer is "You may pass if conditions are safe"

On a combination line the driver on the broken-line side may pass when it is safe, while the driver on the solid-line side may not. The daylight condition in C is imported from headlight rules and grafted onto a lane-marking question where it does not belong.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. You may not pass under any conditions

That is the rule for a solid yellow line on your side, not a broken one. This answer reads any yellow centerline as an outright no-passing marking.

C. You may pass only during daylight hours

The manual does not restrict combination-line passing to daylight; the rule turns on which line is on your side. This answer adds a daylight condition that belongs to headlight rules, not lane markings.

D. You may pass only if oncoming traffic yields

Oncoming traffic does not yield to a passing driver; the passing driver must find a safe gap. This answer inverts the yielding relationship, treating passing as a right rather than a maneuver you must clear yourself.
