PED XING Pavement Legend

Pedestrian crossing ahead; slow down and yield to people in the crosswalk.

PED XING is the pavement abbreviation for pedestrian crossing. Painted as a white word marking in the travel lane, it supplements pedestrian-crossing signs and gives drivers advance notice that a marked crosswalk is ahead. When a word message runs on more than one line it is laid out to read in the direction of travel, with the first word nearest the approaching driver, so you read PED then XING as you roll up to the crossing.
