Oregon Practice Road Markings

On the road ahead you see an area marked with yellow diagonal stripes. What does this area indicate?

Tall vertical rectangle outlined in solid yellow and filled with evenly spaced yellow diagonal stripes running from lower left to upper right, set against a dark charcoal pavement background.
  1. A.
    A two-way left turn lane.
  2. B.
    An off-limits area. Correct
  3. C.
    A passing zone.
  4. D.
    A construction area.
The Why

The answer is "An off-limits area."

Yellow diagonal stripes within a painted median mark fixed objects ahead or areas where vehicle use is not allowed. It is illegal to drive in or make a turn across these stripes. Treat the striped area as off-limits to all vehicle movement. Drivers drawn to A confuse yellow diagonal stripes (off-limits painted median) with the two-way special left turn lane, another yellow-bordered center area but one they may legally enter to turn.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. A two-way left turn lane.

A two-way special left turn lane is a usable center lane drivers enter just before turning, not a striped median that bars vehicle use. This answer confuses yellow diagonal stripes (off-limits painted median) with the two-way special left turn lane, another yellow-bordered center area but one drivers may legally enter to turn.

C. A passing zone.

Yellow diagonal stripes are off-limits, not a passing zone. This answer confuses diagonal-stripe median markings with broken-yellow center lines that allow passing.

D. A construction area.

Construction zones use orange signs and markings, not yellow diagonal stripes. This answer confuses yellow median striping with orange work-zone traffic-control devices.
