Oregon Practice Parking

In Oregon, what is the minimum distance you must stay from a fire hydrant when parking?

  1. A.
    7 1/2 feet.
  2. B.
    10 feet. Correct
  3. C.
    15 feet.
  4. D.
    50 feet.
The Why

The answer is "10 feet."

You may not park within 10 feet of a fire hydrant. The buffer exists so that a fire crew can deploy a hydrant connection without your vehicle blocking access. The rule applies whether you are in your vehicle or not; sitting in the driver's seat next to a hydrant is still a violation.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. 7 1/2 feet.

The hydrant minimum is 10 feet; 7 1/2 feet is the clearance from railroad or light rail tracks when parking would interfere with the train. Misreading: Confuses the 10-foot fire-hydrant rule with the 7 1/2-foot railroad or light rail track clearance listed in the same No Parking list.

C. 15 feet.

The hydrant minimum is 10 feet (15 feet is the fire-station driveway minimum on the same side). Misreading: Confuses the 10-foot fire-hydrant rule with the 15-foot fire-station driveway rule listed on the same page.

D. 50 feet.

50 feet is the rule for parking near a railroad rail or behind a traffic signal where your vehicle blocks the view. Misreading: Confuses the 10-foot fire-hydrant rule with the 50-foot rule for railroad rails or sight-blocking traffic signals.
