North Carolina Practice Passing

You want to pass another vehicle on a hill or curve. What does the manual say you must have first?

  1. A.
A clear view of at least 500 feet. Correct
  2. B.
Enough distance to see the horizon.
  3. C.
Line of sight to the next intersection.
  4. D.
Roughly a quarter mile of open road.
The Why

The answer is "A clear view of at least 500 feet."

The manual bans passing on any curve or hill where the driver cannot see at least 500 feet ahead. Drivers who ballpark the figure at a quarter mile, a more familiar odometer unit, reach for choice D, but a quarter mile is more than twice the 500-foot threshold the manual actually sets.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. Enough distance to see the horizon.

Highway horizons run miles ahead; the rule sets a much shorter, specific minimum. This answer reads the requirement as generic 'see far ahead' guidance rather than the printed 500-foot figure.

C. Line of sight to the next intersection.

The manual keys the rule to a set distance in feet, not to a landmark. This answer borrows an intersection-sight-line habit from urban driving, where a corner stands in for a measured distance.

D. Roughly a quarter mile of open road.

A quarter mile is about 1,320 feet, more than double the printed threshold. This answer rounds the figure into a familiar odometer unit and lands on a number over twice the statutory one.
