-

-
B.
Turn the wheel sharply back onto the pavement
-
C.
Downshift into a lower gear to slow the vehicle
-
D.
Ease off the accelerator and steer straight ahead Correct
The answer is "Ease off the accelerator and steer straight ahead"
The manual tells you to slowly remove your foot from the accelerator and steer straight ahead, then let the engine slow the vehicle; only when stopped or nearly stopped do you check for traffic and gradually ease back onto the road. Drivers who pick 'turn the wheel back onto the pavement' are falling back on the lane-correction instinct that works for an ordinary lane drift, which is exactly the move the manual warns can make you skid, lose control or overturn when two tires are on the shoulder.
The traps in the wrong answers
A. Brake firmly to slow down quickly
The manual warns against braking immediately after a drop-off onto the shoulder, saying you could skid, lose control or overturn. This answer reaches for the brake-for-danger reflex drivers use for any sudden hazard, missing that braking with two tires on the shoulder can cause a skid or loss of control.
B. Turn the wheel sharply back onto the pavement
The manual says do not try to turn back before the vehicle slows, warning that you could skid, lose control or overturn. This answer treats a drop-off like a normal lane departure and yanks the wheel toward the pavement, the exact move the manual pairs with braking as a cause of skid, loss of control or rollover.
C. Downshift into a lower gear to slow the vehicle
The manual has you release the accelerator and let the engine slow the vehicle, not shift gears. This answer borrows the lower-gear step from the brake-failure procedure and applies it to a shoulder drop-off, where any abrupt input risks a skid or loss of control.
