Fog leaves you with extreme trouble seeing, so you pull far off the road, stop, and turn on your flashers. How do you exit the vehicle?
-
A.
Stay inside until the fog clears.
-
B.
Step out through a rear door with the interior light on.
-
C.
From the passenger side, and stay away from the road. Correct
-
D.
From the driver's side, watching for oncoming traffic.
The answer is "From the passenger side, and stay away from the road."
The manual routes the exit away from traffic: leave from the passenger side and stay clear of the road. Drivers pick choice D out of habit, since the driver's door is the one they use every trip, and never notice that here the door opens into a lane a following driver may not see in time.
The traps in the wrong answers
A. Stay inside until the fog clears.
The manual has you exit and clear the vehicle, not sit inside beside a live road in fog. This answer reads 'secure the vehicle' as a reason to stay in it rather than to step away from it.
B. Step out through a rear door with the interior light on.
The manual names the passenger side; a rear door and dome light are not part of the procedure. This answer improvises a compromise instead of following the passenger-side instruction.
D. From the driver's side, watching for oncoming traffic.
The driver's-side door opens toward the travel lane; the manual routes exits the other way. This answer defaults to the driver's-side habit used on every routine trip and misses that the same door now opens beside a lane.
