New York Practice Turning

You are turning left from a one-way road onto a two-way road. Where does the manual say to place your vehicle as you enter the new road?

  1. A.
In the far-right lane of the new road.
  2. B.
On the shoulder until oncoming traffic clears.
  3. C.
Just right of the center line, close to it. Correct
  4. D.
Straddling the center line to shorten the turn.
The Why

The answer is "Just right of the center line, close to it."

When you turn left from a one-way road onto a two-way road, the manual has you enter to the right of the center line and hug it as close as you can. Drivers who assume any left turn drops them into the far-right lane (the general keep-right instinct again) pick option A, but the manual pins you tight against the center line to keep the arc short.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. In the far-right lane of the new road.

The far-right lane is not where the manual finishes this turn; it names a position hugging the center line. This answer reaches for the general keep-right instinct instead of the tighter position the manual specifies for this turn.

B. On the shoulder until oncoming traffic clears.

The manual describes where the turn finishes, not a place to wait for a gap. This answer turns the finish position into a staging area on the shoulder, a place the manual never sends a turning driver.

D. Straddling the center line to shorten the turn.

The manual keeps you on your side of the center line, not straddling or crossing it. This answer crosses into oncoming traffic to cut the corner, exactly the outcome the position rule is written to prevent.
