New York Practice Sharing the Road

You are stopped at a red light in the right lane and plan to turn right on red. What does the manual tell you to check before you turn?

  1. A.
Look left, right, and behind, and check for a bicyclist approaching from your right rear. Correct
  2. B.
Roll forward past the stop line to widen your view of cross traffic.
  3. C.
Look only to the left for approaching traffic, since a bicyclist would be in the crosswalk ahead.
  4. D.
Wait until the light turns green, since right on red is not allowed when bicyclists may be present.
The Why

The answer is "Look left, right, and behind, and check for a bicyclist approaching from your right rear."

Before turning right on red, come to a complete stop and look left-right-left and behind, watching for a bicyclist coming up on your right rear. Drivers who scan only for cross traffic on the left, the way they would at a straight-through green, pick option C and miss the bicyclist tracking the same direction as the turn.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. Roll forward past the stop line to widen your view of cross traffic.

The manual asks for a look behind, not for creeping past the stop line into the crosswalk. Borrows the creep-forward habit some drivers use to see around a stopped truck at an intersection.

C. Look only to the left for approaching traffic, since a bicyclist would be in the crosswalk ahead.

The manual asks for a check behind on the right, not only a scan of cross traffic to the left. Applies the left-right-left habit taught for straight-through crossings, where a rear scan is not part of the drill.

D. Wait until the light turns green, since right on red is not allowed when bicyclists may be present.

The right-on-red rule stays in force; the manual adds a rear check rather than banning the turn. Carries over the no-turn-on-red rule some cities post at bike-heavy intersections, and applies it wherever a bicyclist could be present.
