You want to turn left at a green light, but oncoming traffic keeps you from turning right away. Under the manual, when may you enter the intersection?
-
A.
You must wait behind the stop line until the intersection is completely empty.
-
B.
You may enter only if a green left-turn arrow is displayed.
-
C.
You must yield to any vehicle behind you before entering the intersection.
-
D.
You may enter the intersection if no vehicle ahead of you also plans a left turn. Correct
The answer is "You may enter the intersection if no vehicle ahead of you also plans a left turn."
On a green light, the driver may enter the intersection to prepare for a left turn as long as no other vehicle ahead of them also plans to turn left. Drivers who wait for a dedicated green arrow before entering pick B; the manual permits the entry on any plain green as long as no other left-turning driver is already staged ahead.
The traps in the wrong answers
A. You must wait behind the stop line until the intersection is completely empty.
The manual explicitly allows entering the intersection on a green to stage the turn, provided the position ahead is clear. This answer treats the stop line as a barrier for every turn, a caution learned from waiting behind stop lines at red lights.
B. You may enter only if a green left-turn arrow is displayed.
A plain green is enough; a green arrow is required only where the intersection is set up as a protected turn. This answer requires the reassurance of an arrow, a habit learned in intersections where the arrow is the only safe cue.
C. You must yield to any vehicle behind you before entering the intersection.
Yield rules for a left turn look forward at oncoming traffic, not backward at following traffic. This answer confuses left-turn positioning with lane changes, where the driver checks behind before moving over.
