You have passed a large truck on the left. When may you return to the lane in front of it?
-
A.
When you can see the whole front of the truck in your mirror Correct
-
B.
As soon as your rear bumper clears the truck's front bumper
-
C.
When the truck driver flashes their headlights at you
-
D.
Any time after your turn signal has been on for three seconds
The answer is "When you can see the whole front of the truck in your mirror"
The manual sets the mirror check as the marker for safely returning to the lane after passing a large vehicle. Choice B, pulling in as soon as your rear bumper clears the truck's front, is drawn from the car-to-car gap; a loaded truck needs many extra feet to stop, and cutting in that close forces the trucker into hard braking.
The traps in the wrong answers
B. As soon as your rear bumper clears the truck's front bumper
A truck needs many more feet to stop than a car, so a car-length gap in front of it is not enough. This answer applies the car-to-car pass-and-return distance; a loaded truck's stopping distance is far longer.
C. When the truck driver flashes their headlights at you
The manual does not tie the return to any signal from the truck driver; the decision is yours, made from your mirror. This answer waits for a courtesy flash a driver may see in movies; the manual gives you the mirror as the cue.
D. Any time after your turn signal has been on for three seconds
Time on the signal does not add stopping distance for the truck; the mirror gap does. This answer applies a signal-time habit borrowed from lane-change advice, which does not address the truck's braking need.
