New York Practice Guide Signs

The manual shows three sample route signs from left to right. In what order are those routes shown?

  1. A.
Interstate shield first, then U.S. and state to its right.
  2. B.
County routes lead the lineup, followed by state and U.S.
  3. C.
State route sign on the left, U.S. Route in the middle, interstate shield on the right. Correct
  4. D.
The U.S. shield leads, with interstate second and state last.
The Why

The answer is "State route sign on the left, U.S. Route in the middle, interstate shield on the right."

The manual lists the three sample route signs in this exact left-to-right order: state, then U.S., then interstate. If you reach for the interstate shield first because it is the marker you see most often on the road, you put it at the head of the lineup and pick A.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. Interstate shield first, then U.S. and state to its right.

Interstate comes at the right end of the sample row, not at the front. Puts the most recognized shield at the head of the sample lineup, since the interstate shield is the one a driver pictures first when highway route markers come to mind.

B. County routes lead the lineup, followed by state and U.S.

The three samples pictured are state, U.S., and interstate; county is a route type the manual names but not one it pictures here. Assumes every route type the manual mentions must appear in the sample row, so pulls county from the meaning line and pastes it onto the front of the lineup.

D. The U.S. shield leads, with interstate second and state last.

The U.S. Route marker sits between the state and interstate samples, not at the front of the row. Reads the U.S. Route marker as the default highway sign, so expects it to open any three-shield lineup instead of sitting in the middle.
