Driver's License Test Prep
New York Practice Graduated Licensing

You have earned a driver education Certificate of Completion. What is the earliest age at which a Class D operator license can be issued?

  1. A.
    21
  2. B.
    17 Correct
  3. C.
    16
  4. D.
    18
The Why

The answer is "17"

Driver education knocks a year off the Class D minimum, so an applicant with the Certificate of Completion can be licensed at 17 rather than the base 18. Choice D is what sticks for anyone who reads only the first half of the age sentence and never registers the driver-ed exception at the end.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. 21

Age 21 is the supervisor-age floor, not any license issuance age. This answer confuses the age required to supervise a permit holder with the age to hold a license.

C. 16

Age 16 is the Class DJ junior threshold, not the Class D operator being asked about. This answer grabs the age at which New York first hands a teen any driving credential (the junior license and the learner permit both start there) and reports that number as the operator-tier answer.

D. 18

Age 18 is the base Class D minimum before the driver-ed exception is applied. This answer reads the first half of the age rule and misses the exception at the end.
