You are about to make a left turn on a two-way Nevada road. Which lane must you start the turn from?
-
A.
The far right lane on your side of the road
-
B.
The lane just to the right of the center line Correct
-
C.
Any lane, as long as you signal your intent
-
D.
The oncoming lane just to the left of the center line
The answer is "The lane just to the right of the center line"
For a left turn on a two-way road, the manual specifies the lane just to the right of the center line. Starting from a far right lane, from any lane at will, or from the oncoming side of the center line is not authorized. This tests learners who know left-turn direction but not the specific starting lane.
The traps in the wrong answers
A. The far right lane on your side of the road
The far right lane is for right turns and through traffic; the manual puts a left turn in the lane just right of the center line. This answer reflects the habit of drifting to the rightmost lane before every maneuver regardless of direction.
C. Any lane, as long as you signal your intent
Signaling does not substitute for the specific lane the manual assigns to a left turn. This answer reflects the belief that a blinker alone grants permission to move through any part of the roadway.
D. The oncoming lane just to the left of the center line
The lane left of the center line carries oncoming traffic; starting a left turn from there would drive into approaching vehicles. This answer confuses the driver's left-turn lane with the oncoming lane on the far side of the center line.
