You park facing downhill next to a curb. Which way should you turn your front wheels?
-
A.
Toward the curb, so a rolling car catches on it. Correct
-
B.
Straight ahead, in line with the roadway.
-
C.
It does not matter, as long as the parking brake is set.
-
D.
Away from the curb, toward the traffic lane.
The answer is "Toward the curb, so a rolling car catches on it."
On any hill, the manual has one goal for your front wheels: if your vehicle rolls, it must roll into the curb or off the road, never into traffic. Facing downhill next to a curb, turn the front tires toward or into the curb, so a rolling car catches on the curb almost immediately. The uphill rule with a curb reverses this: turn the wheels away from the curb so the rear rolls back into it.
The traps in the wrong answers
B. Straight ahead, in line with the roadway.
Straight wheels let a rolling vehicle continue down the hill; the manual requires the wheels to point toward the curb. This answer skips the hill-parking wheel-turn rule entirely.
C. It does not matter, as long as the parking brake is set.
The manual pairs a required wheel-turn direction with the parking brake; downhill next to a curb, turn the front tires toward or into the curb even when the brake is set. This answer treats the parking brake as sufficient on its own, remembering the manual's closing 'Always set your parking brake' and skipping the wheel-turn instruction that comes right before it.
D. Away from the curb, toward the traffic lane.
Turning away from the curb sends a rolling vehicle into the traffic lane, the opposite of what the manual instructs for downhill parking. This answer reverses the downhill hill-parking rule and turns wheels toward traffic.
