Illinois Practice Warning Signs

A yellow warning sign shows the pavement edges pinching inward on both sides. What is it telling you?

  1. A.
A lane must merge to the right ahead
  2. B.
A shoulder drop-off runs along the road
  3. C.
A two-lane road suddenly narrows ahead Correct
  4. D.
An approaching bridge has a narrow roadway
The Why

The answer is "A two-lane road suddenly narrows ahead"

The Road Narrows sign tells you that a two-lane road suddenly narrows; the pavement edges taper in but the road stays open on both sides. Drivers who read every narrowing symbol as a bridge warning pick D, carrying over the Narrow Bridge sign as if it covered any tapered pavement.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

A. A lane must merge to the right ahead

A merge to the right is shown by the Merging Lanes sign, not by symmetric narrowing on both sides. This answer treats every road-shape warning as a merge cue, borrowing from the more common Merging Lanes sign.

B. A shoulder drop-off runs along the road

Shoulder drop-offs have their own warning; the Road Narrows sign shows pavement edges tapering, not the shoulder dropping away. This answer reads any warning about pavement edges as a drop-off, a familiar rural hazard drivers already brace for.

D. An approaching bridge has a narrow roadway

The Narrow Bridge sign warns of an approaching bridge with a narrow roadway, which is a different sign from Road Narrows. This answer assumes any tapered symbol points at a bridge, borrowing the Narrow Bridge sign's premise where it doesn't apply.
